We
have found the following books invaluable both in our travels to the U.K., and
as background reading. We would also strongly recommend acquiring the
relevant Ordnance Survey 1:25000 scale map of any area you may want to explore.
Not only will they help you to find the out of the way ancient sites, you may
also find some other places of interest to you near to the site you are
visiting. The "Outdoor Leisure" series of maps are very useful to have. The OS
map of "Ancient Britain" is also recommended.
For a very complete bibliography of books relating to this subject please see Alastair McIvor's excellent resource.

A Guide to the Stone Circles of Britain, Ireland and Brittany |
|
Ancient Mysteries of Britainby Janet & Colin Bord published by Paladin ISBN 0-586-08526-2A very useful book covering all of the major sites, and it slips nicely into a large jacket pocket or into a pocket of your rucksack! This guide covers early Christian and Roman sites, places connected to Arthurian legend, mythical creatures, folk lore and traditions - a lot more than just a guide to ancient sites. |
|
A Guide To Ancient Sites In Britainby Janet & Colin Bord published by Latimer ISBN 0-901539-54-6A book that always goes on holiday with me! It covers sites in England, Wales and Scotland which it divides into regions and then into counties. This book covers all of the major sites, and some of the lesser known ones too. Plenty of black and white photographs and useful maps. |
|
Atlas Of Magical Britainby Janet & Colin Bord published by Sidgwick & Jackson ISBN 0-283-99985-3More akin with "Ancient Mysteries of Britain" this book again lists places of interest by region making it useful to take on holiday or read before a day trip to an area. It covers ghosts, folklore, traditional customs, mazes, earth energies and monsters in addition to the better known prehistoric sites. Plenty of good photographs in both black & white and colour. |
|
The Stone Circles of the British Islesby Aubury Burl published by Yale University Press ISBN 0-300-02398-7A valuable asset indeed to anyone wishing to track down stone circles. Burl has provided a fantastic catalogue of sites, providing a lot of detail about each site - and he covers a lot of sites. There is a wide range of plans, tables and maps showing distribution of sites with common features. Plenty of black & white photographs throughout. Very highly recommended for those who want to go into detail and those interested in astro-archaeology. |
